Savage Garden

Recording an album is not always a glamorous talk.  Just ask Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones, who are the Savage Garden guys.  When the duo was recording their debut U.S. CD, they set up shop in a seedy part of Australia in the bedroom of their producer's house.  "It was our first time away from home," remembers Darren.  "We hit some real highs and lows and learned a lot about each other."  Whether it was a good or bad experience, it was a successful venture, 'cause that album has generated two hit singles, "I Want You" and "To The Moon And Back," and a third, "Truly, Madly, Deeply," hit the ground running last month.  Darren and Daniel have spent the past months promothing their album, and say they would like to get a U.S. tour going very soon.  Will there be another album from this savagely adorable Aussie duo?  Read this Q&A to find out the answer to that and other pressing matters!

ALL-STARS: What do you think about all the success you've had here in the U.S.?
DANIEL JONES: We're two kids from a small town in Australia, and to have our first record in the U.S., this is the biggest thing we've ever done!
ALL-STARS: Do you expect to record another album?
DARREN HAYES: Yes, we hope so.
ALL-STARS: Will you be touring?
DARREN: Yes, hopefully sometime early in 1998.
ALL-STARS: What do you enjoy most about the States?
DANIEL: The culture here is amazing.  Coming from Australia, the entertainment world here is amazing.
ALL-STARS: What music has influenced you?
DANIEL: We're very different, actually.  We were both listening to Michael Jackson's Thriller in the '80s.  But I think more than ripping off the past, we're just very into it.  We're pleased to be a part of the pop culture.
ALL-STARS: Would you ever consider moving to America?
DARREN: We'd consider it, yes.  We'd like to base ourselves here at some point.
DANIEL: I think, for us, since we're traveling so much, if we're only home for two weeks out of the year, we'd probably rather be home in Brisbane with our mom's and dads and the dog than be stuck in a really groovy city.
